What is Move Across Kansas?
This is an online exercise tracking tool for individuals. Move Across Kansas is a web-based tool available for anyone interested in recording their exercise time and fitness level year-round.
What is the purpose of Move Across Kansas?
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment launched Move Across Kansas in the summer of 2013. KDHE’s program is based on the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) employee fitness program of the same name. KDHE’s Move Across Kansas program started on the heels of the Governor’s Weight Loss Challenge with the purpose of helping participants maintain a fitness routine. Kansans are encouraged to exercise a minimum of 30 minutes at least five days per week and log their exercise time into the Move Across Kansas website. Some participants in Move Across Kansas were introduced to the fitness tracking program through the Get Active Kansas physical activity campaign, a statewide initiative of the Governor’s Council on Fitness.
What do I need to know about ‘Get Active Kansas’?
If you are participating in this Move Across Kansas web-based program because your community is part of the “Get Active Kansas” campaign, please indicate this in your Move Across Kansas account profile by selecting “Get Active Kansas” in the appropriate drop-down box.
“Get Active Kansas” is the name of the physical activity campaign developed by the Governor’s Council on Fitness to help Kansans realize the tremendous benefits of physical activity and to take action by achieving a greater level of physical activity.
In an effort to accomplish that goal, the Governor’s Council on Fitness recruited at least one Physical Activity Champion from each County in Kansas. These health champions are working in their communities to share resources and promote the activities of the Governor’s Council on Fitness and the Get Active Kansas campaign. How does this website work?
Move Across Kansas offers virtual travels across the state of Kansas. Each day a participant exercises, he or she can log on to the Move Across Kansas website to track his or her progress on a map containing a route, simulating a tour across the state. A new route is available on the first day of every month, with each route displaying various points of interest along the trail. The first full route began July 1, 2013.
Each participant can receive credit for up to 60 minutes of exercise each day. A physical activity routine that includes a minimum of 30 minutes a day, five days a week, will equate to “completing” the monthly route (600 total minutes).
What is the time commitment to participate in Move Across Kansas?
No matter the type of physical activity, adults are encouraged to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Children are encouraged to exercise for the same number of days but for 60 minutes each day. No matter the amount of time you exercise or what type of activity you are tracking, you can use Move Across Kansas to monitor your progress. Move Across Kansas is a year-round program. Note: The features of Move Across Kansas allow you to go back 7 days on the calendar to submit your exercise time. Therefore, if you are away from the computer for a couple days, you can still go back and track your time for the days you missed entering it in Move Across Kansas.
What counts as physical activity?
Participants can record any type of physical activity that is part of their fitness routine. Examples might include: jogging, using the stair climber, walking the dog, gardening, pushing a lawn mower, playing with your children and climbing stairs. For additional information and examples, check out the physical activity tab on this website.
I participated in the Governor’s Weight Loss Challenge. Do I need to re-register for Move Across Kansas?
No. The login information you used to sign into the Governor’s Weight Loss Challenge website (email and password) can be used to immediately log in for Move Across Kansas.
I am locked out of my account because of too many wrong password entries. What should I do?
Locked accounts will automatically unlock after ten minutes. Wait and try to log in again after that time has passed.
I can’t remember my password. Help!
At the login screen, click the “Forgot password?” link. Enter your email address and the security code as it is displayed. On the next page, answer your security question. A randomly generated password will be sent to your email inbox. Copy that password from the body of the email and paste it in as your password entry when logging in.
Will there be prizes for State employees who participate in Move Across Kansas (as with the Governor’s Weight Loss Challenge)?
Yes; however, Move Across Kansas is not set up as a competition. KDHE’s State Employee Health Plan will hold a prize drawing in November for State of Kansas employees who have completed between 1 to 4 routes between July and October. The drawing will result in $50 gift cards being awarded to 90 State of Kansas employees. To increase their changes of winning a prize, State employees can be entered in the drawing four times if they complete all routes from July through October; however, individuals can only win one prize. Funding for the prizes is provided by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas FOUNDATION.
Will members of the State Employee Health Plan receive HealthQuest credits for participating?
Yes. To obtain HealthQuest credits, it is important for SEHP members to provide the necessary information when registering or first logging in to their Move Across Kansas account. SEHP members will not receive their HealthQuest credits unless they opt in and provide the requested information. The participant can check their information at the “Update personal settings” link on the home page.
How many HealthQuest credits can I receive for participating in Move Across Kansas?
During the first four months of the Move Across Kansas wellness program (July – Oct. 2013), SEHP members can receive two HealthQuest credits for each monthly route they complete. A bonus of an additional two credits can be earned upon completion of all four routes (a total of 10 credits are possible). Participants can expect to see credits awarded to their HealthQuest account within three weeks after the end of each month.
What if I forget to enter my exercise time for a day?
The Move Across Kansas website allows all participants to enter their minutes 7 calendar days into the past. While we recommend updating your activity on the same day it occurs, you will still be able log your time if you’ve missed a few days. Participants will also have the 7- day grace period at the end of the month to finish logging all activity for the route during that month.
I am entering my exercise minutes but my icon isn’t moving further along the route. Why is that?
To keep track of all of your exercise time, the site allows you to enter more than 60 minutes of activity each day; however, your icon will only move on the route for the distance represented by 60 minutes.
I jog in the morning and lift weights at night. Can I make multiple entries per day?
Yes. Participants can make an unlimited number of entries to accurately reflect how much time they have spent exercising. However, even with multiple entries, participants will only move on the route for the distance represented by 60 minutes.
I see that there are other tabs like “Weight” and “Mile Time” to record and measure my fitness. How do these entries contribute to my participation in Move Across Kansas?
We want to provide participants with multiple resources to use in measuring their health. You can still record your weight loss and can measure your fitness with a walking mile time test and resting heart rate tool. These entries are entirely optional and do not contribute to the progress reflected on your route.
I have a question that isn’t covered here. Who should I contact?
